Bhai Phota, is performed by the sister who religiously fasts until she applies a phota or mark on her brother's forehead, offers him sweets and gifts and prays for his long and healthy life. The tilak applied on brother's forehead is made of ghee, sandalwood chandan paste and kaajal. The sisters wish happiness to the brothers by giving them sweets, while brothers promise to protect their sisters.
Deepavali, popularly known as the festival of lights, is a five day festival which begins on Dhanteras, celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha dark fortnight of the month of the Hindu calendar Ashwin and ends with Bhaubeej, celebrated on the second lunar day of Shukla Paksha bright two weeks of the Kartik month of Hindu calendar.
